Unable to install programs

I recently upgraded to SP2 and while the computer seems to
be working fine, I have not been able to complete the
install on several new pieces of software. The install
gets about half way thru and then hangs up and eventually
errors out that installer is not responding. Any ideas
how to resolve this one?

I've had success with similar problem by booting into Safe Mode and
installing the recalcitrant program. Usually it works and is recognized when
a normal boot is tried.
