laptop comes with XP home SP1.

unable to upgrade to XP pro full since it is not SP1. MS does not support
this.

tried to do fresh install to XP pro. CD inserted and booted from CD.
setup loads drivers, then it says it is now starting windows, but
hanges there.

does this means I can't install XP pro on this laptop becuase it
has XP home on it?

thanks

You are correct, one cannot upgrade XP Home w/SP1 using
a non-SP1 version of XP Pro. You'll need to perform a
"clean install".

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

2. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

3. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
4. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
5. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

6. Clean Install Windows XP

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Thanks, but I have done all that, and the installation still hangs.

I have put the windows XP pro full edition CD into the cdrom.
removed all USB devices from the laptop (even the USB mouse and
keyboard that I have added are removed now).
laptop boots from CD ok, setup starts, says it is loading files....

then at the end it says "setup is starting windows", but now the laptop
hangs... nothing happens after that!

btw, I never do see step 6 as per this web site:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

which is:

"6. Next you will get the option to repair or enter setup,
choose to enter setup. Press ENTER "

i.e. after loading files, the setup does right to the messages saying
"setup is starting windows" , is this strange?

This is a new laptop, toshiba satellite P25-S509.

any other ideas to try to install windows XP pro on this laptop?

thanks
