Unable to import or use old .pst file

After my PC crashed when installing XP SP2 (now known registery file error
with 64 bit Athlons!) I managed to go in in "safe mode" and copy my
outlook.pst file to CD (about 14MB), but couldn't recover windows. So, I then
completely re-loaded XP / SP2 / Office 2003 successfully and tried importing
my old outlook.pst file, but it keeps coming up with an error saying the file
is not a personal folders file. It won't open as an Outlook data file or
import within Outlook. Is it possible the original file is corrupted, or am I
missing something obvious? It shows as an Outlook file in Windows Explorer.
An ideas?

P.S. I've already copied the outlook.pst file from CD to my hard drive and in
doing so it removed the "read only" status. so it's no that! I'm lost...

P.P.S. I've now tried running scanpst.exe and it says it cannot recognise the
file and that no data can be recovered. Oh well...
