Haven't tried a re-install yet...question-since this is the bosses
laptop and he has info on there he should've saved to the net drive
but didn't, will that info disappear or would a re-install provide an
upgrade option?
Since this is your boss's laptop, retrieve the data first. Boot the
laptop with either Knoppix or a Bart's PE and get the data off. If the
laptop won't boot with either of those rescue systems, there is
probably a hardware failure.
In that case, pull the hard drive and slave it in a working Windows
machine. You will need a laptop hard drive adapter. If this works, you
will be able to get the data off using the working Windows install.
If the hard drive can't be accessed that way, you can run a drive
diagnostic utility on it. Get the utility from the hard drive mftr. and
do a thorough test. If the drive fails, it will need to be replaced.
*WARNING*: If the drive is making any loud clicking and/or grinding
noises and the data is crucial DO NONE OF THE ABOVE. The more you work
with a failing hard drive the less your chance of retrieving the data.
In that case - or if you can't get anything off the drive because it
has failed - pack it off to a professional data recovery company. I
like DriveSavers (
www.drivesavers.com) but there are others such as
Ontrack and Seagate Data Recovery. These companies are not inexpensive,
but only your boss can determine the value of his data.
If the hard drive is healthy and you get the data off, you can then put
it back in the original machine and do a Repair Install, Clean Install,
or whatever is necessary knowing that you won't lose the boss' data.
