Unable to find server

Hi All,
I have a new computer running xp. Set up a dial up
networking connection to my ISP and all worked fine. Then
tried to set up a home network but stopped when I
discovered my old ME machine was no longer usable. Since
then I can still connect to my ISP and ping/tracert
devices like the ISP's mail and name servers by name or ip
address, but when I use outlook 2000 to check/send mail it
comes back unable to find the POP or smtp servers. When I
try the browser to connect to any site get the server not
found or DNS error message. Can any one help please?
Matt

Hi, Matt

So you can ping all the internet addresses by name and ip, but cannot browse
them with IE? Do you have somekind of proxy address entered in Internet
Options? Do you have any AntiVirus Software or Firewall installed?

Hi Matt,

Have you tried to install SpyBot and remove all the spyware you have got.
Try using some other browser (mozila, opera,..). Just to see if browsing
works. Maybe restarting the tcp/ip stack (in CMD run "netsh int ip reset
c:\tcp.txt". If that does not work, try to restore system configuration a
few days back (msconfig \ launch system restore).
If the problem persist then you should consider about formating. I think
that even repair wont do the trick.

I have the exact same problem. Just started last night!!
My ISP tech support was able to ping me, and I could ping
them, but outlook and IE could connect to anything.

They said something was wrong with my comp and call my
manufacturer!!

No proxies here either, haven't changed anything since
the day before it happened. I tried turning off the IPF
in XP and still it doesn't work.

Hopefully someone here know's what's wrong.

Hi Sebastjan,
Found the problem. As you suggested was Norton 2004
antivirus. Norton not running as far as I could tell but
problem was resolved when I uninstalled the program !
Thanks for your help
Matt
