unable to find or install printer from control panel

I can print fine from Word, but when I go into control
panel/printers and faxing and try to pause or cancel
printing there are no printeres listed. when I try to add
a printer by wizard or file menu nothing happens. I have
already reinstalled Windows XP and this has not helped. I
do get a message that the Directory Services is currently
unavailiable.

Sounds like your print spooler has stopped.

From the command prompt, type

net start spooler

and hit enter

Now go back to the Control Panel. Have the printers reappeared?
