Unable to Establish Network Connection

Hi. I'd like to occasionally connect my laptop to my desktop in order
to transfer large files. I was told that the easiest way to do this is
to connect the two computers with a crossover cable (CAT5) and create
a home network. I've tried doing this over and over; however, every
time I try to connect to the host computer to access shared files, I
get an error message indicating that I may not have access rights to
the resources.

I can't figure out what I could have done wrong.

FYI: Both computers are running XP. Also, I don't care to share an
Internet connection, I just want to connect the PC's. So when Network
Setup Wizard asks me to choose a connection method, I choose either
"This computer connects directly to the Internet. I do not have a
network yet." OR "This computer belongs to a network that does not
have an Internet connection."

Any suggestions as to what my problem might be? Can anyone walk me
through this?

Go to your network connections and get to the properties of your network for
both computers
Check the box on each of the following AND click the INSTALL button below
for each.

That should work.

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer sharing for MS Networks
QoS Packet scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Thanks for the quick reply. I did as you suggested; but the Properties
box indicates that each of the items listed is already installed.
Should I remove them and try re-installing them?

FYI: Under TCP/IP properties, I have the following:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Under Client for Microsoft Network properties I have "Windows Locator"
as the RPC service.

I fell foul of this misapprehension that they are / were installed. Just
click on install anyway and see what happenes - it worked for me ;-)
