hi all,

wxp pro sp2, i.e. 6, using hotmail,

i encountered this message when i tried to download any attachments from
hotmail.

"Internet Explorer cannot download xxxx from by101fd.bay101.hotmail.msn.com.
Internet explorer was not able to open the internet site. The requested site
is either inavailable or cannot be found. Please try again leater."

i know there is a list of blacklisted attachment that cannot be downloaded
but literally nothing can be downloaded followed by the above message. there
is no problem using a different browser (e.g. opera) or other email client

situation.

Thank you for contacting MSN Hotmail technical support!

The troubleshooting steps below will help you resolve the problem you are
experiencing downloading e-mail attachments.

If you are experiencing a different problem, or if the troubleshooting does
not resolve the problem, reply to this message.

1. Optimize Internet Explorer and reset your default browser settings

A. Launch Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, and click Internet
Options
B. On the General tab, click Delete Cookies and then click "OK".
C. On the General tab, click "Delete Files", and make sure the box
labeled "Delete all offline content" is checked. Click OK.
Depending on the number of files you have in this folder it may
take several minutes to complete.
D. Reset your security settings
a. Click the tab labeled Security and click the Trusted Sites icon.

b. Click the Sites button and uncheck the box starting with Require
server verification (https: ) for all sites in this zone, at the bottom of
the dialog.
c. In the text box labeled "Add this Web site to the zone:", type
"*.hotmail.com" and then press "Add". Do the same for "*.passport.com", and
"*.msn.com" and then click "OK". You will know you successfully
added the sites because you will see them appear in the box below labeled
"Web sites:".
If you receive a Trusted sites error message, please double check
the spelling of your entry.
d. Make sure the security settings for Trusted Sites is set to the
default level by clicking "Default Level". Repeat these steps for the
Internet
zone and the Restricted zone.
E.
a. Click "Advanced"
b. Scroll to "HTTP 1.1 Settings"
c. Uncheck "Use HTTP 1.1" and check "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy
connection"

F. Note: If you are using Internet Explorer 5.5 or earlier, the following
options will not be available to you.
a. Click the tab labeled Privacy and click the Sites button.
b. In the text box labeled Address of Web site, type hotmail.com and
click Allow.
c. Repeat step b. for passport.com and msn.com. You will know you
successfully added the sites because you will see them appear in the box
labeled
Managed Web sites. Click OK.
d. Make sure the privacy settings are set to the default level by
clicking the Default button.

2. Adjust your sign in settings

To open attachments directly from Hotmail, Internet Explorer must be able
to store a cookie on your desktop. Internet Explorer cannot do this if you
have selected "Always ask for my e-mail address and password" when you
sign in.

Click "Save my e-mail address" or "Save my e-mail address and password"
next time you sign in to allow Internet Explorer to save the cookie to your
computer.

Note: Make sure to click "Sign Out" when you would like to end your
Hotmail session if you select either of these options.

3. Try saving the message to the computer you are using instead of opening
the file directly from Hotmail. If you are on a public computer
make sure to delete the file you saved after you are finished using it.

If the troubleshooting provided did not fix the problem, or if you have a
different problem, reply to this message.

Thank you again for contacting MSN Hotmail technical support!

Sorry, but I forgot to state that I got tired of searching the past few
months for an answer to this problem with no official solutions. So, I
finally called Microsoft support and they then refered me to Hotmail support
which I submitted and online email support question. This is the official
answer from Hotmail support which I received. I hope that this helps.
