Unable to create a PPPoE connection in XP

Hi,

I'm unable to create a PPPoE connection using Windows so I can use my
DSL modem. My DSL modem was working fine up to a week ago and then it
quit, unexpectedly. I'm using an Efficient Networks Speedstream 5260
DSL modem, if that helps. I've already tried system restore but it
doesn't work. My ISP told me I have a non-uft modem that has to have
a PPPoE connection created for it to be used. My ISP has no software
to do this as Windows XP is capable of creating the PPPoE connection.
However, when trying to create the PPPoE connection in the New
Connection Wizard, the only option I have to describe my connection is
"a broadband connection that is always on." According to my ISP, I
must select "a broadband connection that requires a username and
password" for authentication reasons but it is greyed out. I found a
KB article that sounds like it references the issue (Q320558) and I
haven't tried it yet today (and I'm hesitant to make changes to the
registry) but I need to have this issue resolved quickly and i was
wondering if anyone else knew of this issue and, if so, how did you
resolve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried this software? http://www.raspppoe.com/

Thanks for your response, Ron. I downloaded the software and will attempt to
use it later. I was reading some of the installation instructions and I
wasn't totally comfortable with the install so I wanted to download other
PPPoE programs. I tried to download Enternet 300 and WinPoet but was unable
to find it available anywhere. Do you know where I can download WinPoet and
Enternet 300? Also, how stable is RASPPPoE in Windows XP anyway? Is it not
all that hairy and the instructions are just making a bigger deal of it than
they need to or does this program require some special configuration?

Also, if anyone knows of a registry hack or a setting in Windows XP that
would resolve my problem I'd appreciate hearing about it!

Thanks again, everyone.

Robert Schlabbach is one of the OS beta testers and he had RasPPPoE out
before MS added it to XP. It is very stable and dependable - I used it
extensively for a few years back when I had DSL and would give it 5 out of 5
stars. WinPoet I don't have any knowledge about, but I wouldn't give 5
pennies for Enternet 300. Even SBC's tech rep suggested ignoring that
program when he set up my DSL.
