Unable to create a new Outlook 2003 data file

G

Guest

I want to create a new Outlook 2003 data file for archiving purposes. But
when I do File / New / Outlook Data File, there is only one choice: Business
Contact Manager Database. There is no option for a .pst file.

I've run ScanPST and have no errors in the file.

Is there any other way to creat a new .pst file?

Thanks!

Hi Smokey,
Is there any other way to creat a new .pst file?

In Outlook under "File/Datafile/Datafilemanagement/Add" => Personal Folder
(PST)

2nd way:

"Start/Settings/Control Panel/Mail"

Doubleclick on Mail => Datafiles => Add => Personal Folder

If you go over the Control Panel ("Start/Settings/Control Panel/Mail") and
if you click on "Show Profiles" you must have min. 1 profil, normally named
"Outlook".

If you don´t have a profile, you can not add a PST file.

Dear Oliver,

Thanks so much for those two good ideas. The only problem is that they both
eventually take you to the same screen that in my case only offers the choice
of Business Contact Manager Database - no .pst choice.

I do have a profile.

Any other suggestions? What could possibly be wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Smokey,

I never have seen this before.

The "services" of Outlook are normally stored/listed in a "mapisvc.inf"
file.
(Maybe an Outlook MVP could confirm this technical details)

This file is normally stored under: .....\System\Mapi\1031 or another
country code. (1031 is for Germany) ;-)

MY "mapisvc.inf" have the following entries under "services":

[Services]

MSEMS=Microsoft Exchange Server
MSPST AB=Personal Addressbook
MSPST MS=Persönliche Folder (.pst)
CONTAB=Outlook-Addressbook
INTERSTOR=Internetfolder
O10ABP=Exchange-Addressbook
MSFAX XP=Faxmailtransport
POL_SVC=Public ShareFolder
[Default Services]
MSEMS=Microsoft Exchange Server
MSFAX XP=Faxmailtransport

Maybe your Outlok Profil or your "mapisvc.inf" file is corrupt.

I found the following article for Office 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/268996/

Newprof.exe and Mapisvc.inf can also be obtained from the Microsoft Outlook
2000 CD-ROM or from the first CD-ROM of Microsoft Office 2000. The temporary
directory and its contents may be safely deleted after the procedure is
complete.

I don´t know if you could find this mapisvc.inf file also on the Office 2003
CD and change this file from the CD with the file on your system.

Another idea could be the repair function of your office CD. Sorry but I
never get this problem before.

Dear Oliver,

Thanks for the ideas!

I have three mapisvc.inf files in the following two folders:

c:\windows\system32
c:\program files\common files\system\msmap\1033
c:\documents and settings\smokey forester\recent

Here's the contents of the second address:

[MAPI]
ServiceOrder=
[IrisMS]
Providers=Iris_MS
PR_SERVICE_DLL_NAME=IrisMS.DLL
PR_SERVICE_ENTRY_NAME=IrisServiceEntry
PR_RESOURCE_FLAGS=SERVICE_SINGLE_COPY
[Iris_MS]
PR_PROVIDER_DLL_NAME=IrisMS.DLL
PR_RESOURCE_TYPE=MAPI_STORE_PROVIDER
PR_RESOURCE_FLAGS=STATUS_NO_DEFAULT_STORE
PR_PROVIDER_DISPLAY=Business Contact Manager Database
PR_DISPLAY_NAME=Business Contact Manager
PR_MDB_PROVIDER=4B4506EEF0B1A147AA0557297D0A084A
[Services]
IrisMS=Business Contact Manager Database

What do you make of three versions? And what do you suggest next?

Thanks,

Smokey

Dear Oliver,

New development! I figured out how to trick Outlook into creating a new
..pst file so now I'm ready to archive. But when I choose a folder to archive
and point to the new archive file, I get the error "no object found." Now
what to do?

I really look forward to your reply!

Best wishes,

Smokey

Hi Smokey,

I checked also some different ways. "Normally" Outlook create the "archive"
or backup PST by himself.

"Normally" you only need to select any kind of folder in Outlook (like
"Inbox"), then go in Outlook under "File/archiving" and now select the
folder where you want to create the "archive.pst". (you could do this also
on the desktop).

Now "normally" Outlook create the PST file AND the folderslist of the
archive PST in Outlook by himself.

Could you try this? Maybe it is easier to use this way instead to find out
why you could not open your PSt file. ;-)
