pst getting corrupted automatically

Outlook 2007 on XP

Outlook is corrupting my pst files everytime I open a datafile. Scanpst
"fixes" it, but next time I open it and run scanpst, it says there are errors
again. Virgin pst files added in the data management window are corrupt as
soon as they are created. Existing backups and psts have the emails,
contacts, calendars "removed" by running scanpst.

I have:


repaired Outlook from Add Programs control panel
run diagnostics within Outlook
created a new profile
run chkdisk

This is driving me crazy and I can't get my mail.

Is there a troubleshooting list for Outlook? Any one familiar with this
issue/problem?

O.K.

So we now know that PST files are as easily corruptible as are DBX files in
Outlook Express.

Therefore we need to have the WLM Message Store ASAP for OUTLOOK as well --
or a functional equivalent.

So did you use the new Unicode format .pst file to store your e-mails
(which has a default max size of 20GB but which can be enlarged)? Or
did you continue using an old ANSI format .pst file that has a limit of
2GB in size (1.87GiB)? How big is your .pst file? If it is exceeding
its max size, it can get corrupted. It sounds like the file is too big
and you keep corrupting it by adding more items to it that then makes it
exceeds its max size.

I just want to verify something.

You create a brand new, clean pst.

You don't put anything into it, but you add it to your profile.

You close outlook and restart it, and Outlook says that PST is corrupt?

Outlook doesnt corrupt pst's, an application that is accessing the pst may
cause problems, eg a third party search tool, or it my be that you have a
failing HD or bad memory
When you have a known clean default pst try opening outlook using the safe
switch;
Run
Outlook.exe /safe
Then see if the behaviour is repeated

Basically, yes.

Created new profile

So Outlook didn't say it was corrupt, scanpst did.

In my case, scanpst says everything that gets opened by Outlook has errors,
even after scanpst says it has fixed the errors!

Yes, using the safe switch when I create a new pst, scanpst will say the file
has errors. A search tool would have to be acting instantaniously to keep
up. Maybe it is. Any other thoughts?

errors, even after scanpst says it has fixed the errors!

Why are you running scanpst then? I must have missed that bit.

I'll be honest, I've used every version of Outlook since it came out, and
have always had PST files and I've never had one go corrupt.

But heck, try this.

Exit outlook.
Go to task manager, on the processes tab, verify Outlook.exe is not running.
Go to Start - Run, run outlook /safe
Create a new pst.
Exit outlook.

Try running scanpst on that pst and see what it says.

A lot of people already jumped in here but I wanted to know something that
hasn't been asked yet;
Are you using the version of scanpst.exe that's shipped with Outlook 2007 or
did you download it somewhere?
You must use the one that ships with Outlook 2007. By default, it is
installed here;
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\

Also, when you do a check on your hard disk, does it complete without any
errors?

Outlook tells you to, not all the time, just foe the heck of it.

Are you creating a new pst then immediately running it?
