unable to copy files to CD

I have Win XP Pro installed. Have been writting files to my writable CD drive
for several years, using the Windows Explorer Writable CD Folder (see article
describing that
method)http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/copytocd.mspx
Today that method stopped working. If I load in a blank CD, the computer
does not load up the CD drive dialog box. If I try to drag the files to the
D: drive using Windows Explorer, it tells me to load up a blank disk and then
once I have loaded the disk, nothing happens. I am forced to click the Cancel
button and then the D: drive is no longer accessible. I have to reboot the
computer to free it.
I have repeated the procedure several times with same results.
Would appreciate your help in solving this problem.

Hello,

First thing to check - in case it somehow became disabled - is to
right-click the drive => Recording tab => check that the box 'Enable
recording on this drive' is checked.

Have you used a CD cleaning disk in the drive? If recording is enabled per
Claymore's post, one other thing to check is to go to Start | Run |
Services.msc and make sure the Imapi CD Burning services is started.

One possibility is that the drive has died for writing.

Indeed, the Recording Tab is not showing up in the Properties of the CD Rom
drive. Windows is not recognizing my drive as recordable. I am going to read
thru the articles that Rock posted for me and see if I can fix this problem
tomorrow. Thanks.

The recording tab is not showing on Properties Menu of CD drive.
The links to the articles were very helpful. I have tried to edit the Win XP
Registry to identify the CD-RW drive as a recordable drive (article 316529),
but that did not work.
I then consulted article 315350 because I get the "Drive D: is not
accessible. Incorrect function." message. The article mentions that there
could be a problem with Roxio Easy CD creator, if it's an early version. I
have version 8.05 so it is compatible with Win XP.
To find out if the drive had died for writting, I used Roxio Easy CD creator
and was able to copy a cd. I also checked my Itunes software and was able to
burn from that software.
I deleted the driver from the Device Manager and uninstalled corresponding
disk drive and IDE ATA/ATAPI controller secondary IDE channel. Rebooted.
Driver was reinstalled, but that didn't change anything.
Tomorrow I am going to go and buy a CD cleaner as you suggested.
In the meantime, any more ideas as what could be wrong?

Did you try a system restore to the previous day when things were working?
What changed in that day? Were any updates installed for software/hardware?
Any updates from windows update?

If any updates were installed the first step would be to remove them through
Add/Remove programs. Then do a system restore to a date when things worked.
If no updates, still do the system restore.

If that doesn't work, were it me, I would run the cdgone.zip file from here:
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

It deletes the upper and lower filters entries in the registry and makes
other changes as well. I don't know what impact that will have on iTunes.

I suggest you image the system as it is now to an external drive using
something like Acronis True Image Home, version 10, before running the file.
That way if it makes matters worse you can restore the image.

As there were no Windows Updates, and I hadn't installed any new software or
hardware, I didn't think of using System Restore (tried it a couple of times
in the past without success so I didn't think of it his time). I restored to
the previous week and now the copying to CD works again. Problem solved.
Thanks.
