Unable to connect using Remote Desktop

I've been using VPN and Remote Desktop to connect to work for over a year.
The last time I was able to successfully connect was a couple of weeks ago.
Now I'm able to get the connection in VPN with no problem but when I start
Remote Desktop and connect I get the error "The specified remote computer
cannot be found. Verify that you have typed the correct computer name or IP
address and try again". I read a post that mention running Telnet tserv 3389
in the command prompt. I started VPN and then ran the command and get the
message "could not open connection to the host: on port 3389. Connect
failed". Is this a problem on my computer? Any ideas how this can be fixed?

Do a simple test. Can you ping the remote computer after establishing the
VPN? Or check this search result.

Connection. Black screen while connecting to TS. Cause: 1. MTU size may be
too high. 2. you may have a print driver problem. ...

No, I'm unable to ping the IP address and neither can I Telnet the IP address
or machine name. All return errors that connection failed.
