Hello BADHERB,

No one can help if you don't provide at least a modicum of informatiºn.

Is the task scheduler service started?

What build of Windows Defender are you on--top number in help, about?

Is this a home machine, or one used in an office?

Which version of Windows?

Can you tell me what antivirus product you are running?

Are you on a large, managed network, where access to AutoUpdate is
restricted? Is there a WSUS server on the network?

In the mean time have a look to this post:

Googling bring up a few items on the microsoft.public.windowsupdate
newsgroup, with the info provide by you.

The 0x8024402C or 0x8024502D error codes typically occur because an
incorrect character exists in the proxy override settings.
To resolve these errors, remove characters from the proxy exception list,
and then clear the proxy cache. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.
4. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
• proxycfg -d
• net stop wuauserv
• net start wuauserv

I qoute a Steve D.
I was asked to repost to other newsgroups as I did not last week...

I wanted to step back and make sure we have the signature updating mechanism
in place and working for all the beta testers. To make sure we are firing in
all cylinders, I am asking any user to let me know if signatures are not
downloading and installing for them. One caveat is that users behind SUS or
WSUS servers may be running into issues set by their system admins, so I
cannot help there. However, home users and others not behind corporate
update servers please let me know your signature woes (if any). My contact
information is below; just drop the "online" from the email.
