Unable to boot from disk

I've recently had major problems with my disk so I decided to do a clean
re-install of WinXP. Now the pc will not boot up direct from disk, after the
memory tests the screen goes blank with the cursor just flashing in the top
left corner. I had to go into the bios setting to set the first boot device
as the CDROM so that the pc will boot up. I have booted up to DOS and have
tried :-
deleting the boot.ini file
run 'bootcfg /rebuild'
fixdisk /mbr
fixmbr
and other combinations but I am still only able to boot off of the disk (I
had restored the bios setting). Any ideas please.

Boot from CDROM and boot up to DOS? You start Recovery Console?
You still only boot to CD (not disk) right?

I've had a number of problems so I decided to wipe all and start again. I
formatted the disk using Partition Magic (secure erase), booted from CDROM
and re-installed WinXP with no problems. All is well apart from having to
always boot from the CDROM, if I set the BIOS to boot from HDD0 the PC to
sits there with it's cursor flashing in the top left corner.

Do you have any other HDD in your computer? Do you have a raid controller?
What is your disk configuration? Master Slave
Are jumpers set correctly?

When you boot from CDROM, Windows will start ok?

Start>Run> compmgmt.msc press enter
Under "Storage", select "Disk Management"

Please post this info! Disk(s) partiton types system active etc.
Also post c:\boot.ini

Check root directory for boot.ini, ntdetect.com, ntldr
These are hidden files. Use "Tools", folder options, view in My Computer to
display.

:
Make sure that your partition is an active partition

The partition was active but all appears to be ok now. Thanks for your help
anyway.
