On a Win2000 professional PC, if I choose to add a printer
in the Control Panel--> Printer. If alwasy gives me the
error message " printer operation cannot continue due to
lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable"

Who can help me to fix the problem? Thanks

I'm having the same problem. My printers were all set up
and then I lost them. When I try to add I get the same
error message" printer operation cannot continue due to
lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable".
I've tried manually starting the print spooler in the
command prompt. Also in control panel -> Administrative
tools -> services -> print spooler I started it but as
soon as you go to add printer it shuts down print spooler
and gives the same message. I'm running windows 2000
professional. Any more suggestions?

This failure is usually caused by faulting print drivers. What print
drivers are installed on the system?

We mainly printed to a network printer which is an HP1100,
or a HP 8500. I think they were the original drivers that
came with the printers. I found some instructions on
cleaning out printers which seems a bit involved, but if
it gets us printing then I'm all for it. What do you say
Alan? There may be more print drivers but it won't show
any of the printers that were installed and I can't
remember if any others were there. Basically it may have
been networked to a Konica 7033 as well but that's about
it. (all network printers)

Yes sometime you have to cleanup the information that gets added to registry
from driver / monitor / print processor installs.

Can you export a regkey so I can take a look and make a guess at the issue?
You don't have to just hoping to track this a bit further than removing all
traces of the offender.

I am interested in HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Service\Print

Check that the Print Spooler service is started.

I solved this by uninstalling a couple of programs.
Mcafee Firewall, Kaaza and Ad-aware. My guess is that the
firewall was conflicting. The other two I was just doing
to get rid of the programs because I didn't use them.
Hope this helps someone else.
