I have 2 computers on network both behind a D-link router. Both can access
the internet. Upstairs computer can see workgroup and ping downstairs
computer but can not access files on downstairs computer(Access Denied
warning). The downstairs computer can ping upstairs computer and and router
as well but is unable to see workgroup at all. Also gettng (Access Denied
warning) . This must be a software setting or config that is not right.
Please help. Thanks.

There are various reasons for the "...access denied..." error.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, so we can diagnose your
problems.
Start - Run - "cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window. Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, open
file c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig
listing.

OK, let's enumerate the symptoms.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

OK, the problem is clearly with Kevin.

Brandie can't access or ping Kevin. Kevin can't even ping itself, though it can
access (net view) itself, and it can access and ping Brandie (by ip address
only).

My guess is a firewall on Kevin needs to be configured or un installed. What
AntiVirus product does it have?

Danny,

I appreciate your asking for permission. CDiag is open source, and has
intentionally simple features.
- Uses native operating system commands.
- As few lines as possible, to simplify copying by inexperienced folks needing
help.
- Lines are short, to prevent word wrap when posting (to prevent execution
errors when code is run).
- It's customised by hand, unique for each case, so YOU are responsible for
making it run properly.

CDiag code is subject to improvement without notice. And there's always room
for improvement. ;-)
