Cannot ping after a few seconds

OK.. this is driving me crazy! I have two XP computers,
networked through a linksys router. Downstairs, and
Upstairs. Downstairs can see Upstairs, it's shared
folders, files etc. Upstairs can't see Downstairs. I get
the typical 'workgroup not accessible' error.

So, I tried everything on this discussion board to fix,
and found something odd. If I reboot Downstairs, I don't
log in to it, but I can ping it for about 20-30 seconds
and get replies. After that, no replies, and that's it.

Worse still, I can go log into the Downstairs computer,
and surf the network with no issues!?!

I'm really confused! Both machines appear to be set up
identically.

Someone please help me! Aaaaarrgghhhh!

Mark.

Does your router have a built in firewall? Or are you
running a firewall program on the downstairs computer?

You might have to configure any third party firewall
software to allow the upstairs computer access.

Also, check to make sure that the Windows Internet
Connection Firewall is off (only if you have a firewall
on the router). This may be messing you up a bit.

Let us know if this makes any difference.

Al computers hooked up have their firewalls off. The
router does have one built in, but only blocks stuff from
the 'outside'. That's what I thought it may be first, but
no joy. The thing that bugs me is that I can ping and get
replies for a few secs after the machine boots, then
nothing.

Thanks!

Mark.
