UMAX Ultraslim SE - Windows XP

Hello,

My son has got a Umax Ultraslim SE USB scanner from a friend some 600km away
last week.
The scanner only has a USB connector (no external power) and was working
fine under W2K before it was transported.

When connnected to his WinXP computer, it was recognised immediately and
when either the "Scan" button is pressed or the "Scan" command is given from
within XP or the software that came on the CD, the scannner warms up and
scans, but the result is always a "black striped image", whatever the
settings.

I suppose there could be several possible reasons:

- compatibility - TWAIN drivers (not likelly because scanner is
recognised and scans)
- need to use a powered USB hub (not documented and no errors found in
the WinXP device list)
- scanner head is was damaged during transport (although it was "locked"
and the device was wrapped in plastic)
- ... ???

Any idea or similar experiences anyone (no answer to be found on
http://www.umax.co.uk/support/ or via Google)?

Thanks in advance!

You committed the ultimate Windows XP error. You plugged in the scanner to
Windows XP BEFORE installing the Manufacturers software. Then XP installed
its own driver (BAD).

To Correct that error, you must remove any software installed for the Umax
scanner.

It may be possible to remove the scanner driver in Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs.

If the Driver does not appear in Add/Remove Programs:
To remove the Driver that Windows XP installed, Open Device Manager and
remove any Umax Imaging device you find. You may have to have the scanner
connected and turned on for the device to show in device manager.

Disconnect the scanner after removing it in Device Manager.
Reboot.

Install the software form the Manufacturers CD. Reboot. Connect the scanner,
All should now be well, unless the scanner is defective.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. I tried everything to no avail, but ... while
checking out everything again and again, I detected as a matter of fact that
the scannerhead was only moving a little bit. Looking further, I discovered
that the Lock and Unlock symbols on the bottom of the scanner were not at
the right spot and I had to turn the screw further to fully unlock the head.
Now everything works ;-)

Thanks for your advice!

Greetings from Belgium,

Steve
