UMAX Scanners

I also have a UMAX scanner. When I upgraded to Windows XP
home, it was not recognized. I called them in the hopes
that something could be done. Unfortunatly, they told me
that my scanner will not work under windows xp no matter
what I do. I wish I could have more encouraging words to
offer, but this is what happened to me.

I have a UMAX UC630 and I was told it could'nt be connected to Win95 when
it was released but I got it to work. My model doesn't have a plug 'n play BIOS
but with the right drivers or combination of drivers I've managed to get it to work
on Win98SE and XP Pro as well.
Currently I install MagicScan V2.41NT then VistaScan V3.51 and use V2.41 as
the twain source in Paint Shop Pro. I then either turn the scanner on before booting
OR open Device Manager and refresh, select View->Show Hidden Devices and
select properties for Non-Plug and Play Drivers->UMAXDRV, select the Driver tab
and select Start.
Bit of a pain I know but I've had this SCSI scanner for years and it cost me AU$2500
back then so I'm not about to give up on it :)

Foolish choice, a new USB scanner with faster scans, greater
resolution will cost less than $200, maybe less the $60.

The problem with these parallel port scanners is that the drivers used
old Win3.1 techniques which are positively prohibited in XP. ANd the
makers are not going to do anything about models they regard as having
been obsolete for some years now - with the arrival of USB ones

Just how long has USB been available to the masses?
As I said I bought this SCSI scanner many years ago. USB wasn't
even known of at that time to the best of my knowledge.
I have used USB scanners and have yet to find one that will scan
faster than mine even in one pass. I can scan up to 1200dpi and
never need to go over 300, why would I need anything higher?

Firstly I said it was SCSI and it used Twain when I bought it and UMAX
still release drivers today that support that interface. The only reason
it wouldn't work out of the box was the old non-plug 'n play BIOS but it
can be forced to be recognised manually as can a 1220P mentioned
in the original post.
