REQ: How to remove entries in Device Manager?

G

geezer

I am having trouble trying to get rid of the 'found new hardware
wizard' for my Powerlook II scanner. Even though it is installed and
working (at least for some applications), XP insists it is new
hardware on each bootup. So I need to remove all entries under
'Imaging Devices' in
Device Manager' and start over. They look like this:

Imaging Devices
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX Powerlook II
UMAX Powerlook II

I thought maybe in Safe Mode I could get rid of them. When I try to
do that, I get an error message 'Failed to uninstall the device. The
device may be required to boot up the computer'. I get that whether
in Safe mode or Regular mode.

I even went into Regedit and tried to delete these registry items, but
it won't even do that.

How can I get rid of 'em?

Thanks

Registry removal requires that you add your username to the Access
Control Listing and then grant that user "Full" privileges. Right Click
the Key name and left Permissions.
To see the full listing of devices in Device Manager, do the following:
1.) Add a System Environment Variable named:
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
Set it's value = 1
2.) Open Device Manager, Click View - tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices"
This will allow you to see 100% of the Device Manager entries, the
known but not connected (Phantoms) will now show up.

Is the scanner a true SCSI device ? - If so, it sounds like the SCSI
bus may not be terminated properly.

Thanks for response.

The scanner is UMAC Powerlook II and is SCSI. The scanner is
connected to a PCI (AVA2906) card. The scanner does work, but only
with Vistascan and Vuescan. Not Magicscan (any version). The latter
will not detect presence of the scanner.

The multiple entries came from my repeated tries to get the scanner
installed.

Every time I boot up, XP's 'new hardware wizard' insists that the
scanner (which is turned on) is new and requires installing. If I let
the wizard do the install, it seems to finish properly, but all it
really does is add still another entry to the registry.

I don't know if removal of the duplicative registry entries will make
the wizard go away, but I need to start somewhere.

I'll check out what you say about 'permissions' and let ya know.

Thanks

Yes the scanner is terminated (It has a plug to do that).

If may be so bold - can you be more explicit as to how to do what you
say to do in the registry? I haven't worked with registry-editing
that much.

Thanks

Some Registry Keys & their values are restricted from modifications
or removal. In Windows XP rights are granted by group membership
or a specific user. Using XP Professional, most objects have Security
(TAB) options available to them. On XP Home ACL (Access Control
Listings) are available only in Safe Mode. Either XP version employs
these restrictions on certain "Critical" keys to protect system integrity.
To allow users to change or remove these keys, you have to add your
current username (Profile) to the ACL listing. Once that is done you
have to grant that individual "Full" rights - which gives them the ability
to change key values or delete the key.

For example:
Click Start, Run (Type) Regedit [Enter]
Navigate (+/-) to:
HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum
* This is where Device Manager entries are stored by Category
* In your case expand the SCSI category
You should see an identifier for your Scanner. You would Right-Click
the identifier and then Left-Click "Permissions". Click the Add button
type in your Username. Afterwards, you name should be highlighted or
selected, move to the bottom section and click the "Full Control" to give
the account full access.

Note: Registry Editing is about a 9.0 on the "Shoot-Yourself-in-the-Foot"
Scale. One thing to do is export a Key before making any changes
or download & run ERunt (A Registry Backup utility).

Thanks - I'll give it a try. BTW I have XP PRO SP2.

Heeding your warning, I downloaded, installed, and ran ERUNT. Thanks
for that.

I browsed my regedit to
HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum
but found nothing intelligible (to me).

I did find
HKey_Local_Machine\System\ControlSet001\Enum\SCSI\Scanner&Ven_UMAX&Prod_PL-II&Rev_V1.2
containing 15 (!) folders under it:
4&389e05cb&0&51-57 (7 entries)
4&389e05cb&0&50-57 (8 entries)

I right clicked on Scanner&Ven_UMAX&Prod_PL-II&Rev_V1.2
and selected Permissions and found that there are two users,
'everyone' and 'system'. Everyone looks to be read only, but system
looks to be full control.

I made the choice to set 'everyone' to full control. Sure hope that
was proper thing to do.

Think so? Anyway, I will next try removing the entries in Device
Manager. Let us pray....

Thanks

Did no good at all. I still cannot uninstall or disable the
duplicative entries in Device Manger for the scanner.
Maybe I should have re-booted first?

Any other ideas?

I think maybe you misunderstood my previous posting. Once you
locate the Scanner entries in the Registry - you remove them there.
I would remove all the scanner entries and then from Device Mgr
remove the SCSI controller. Unplug the scanner. Let XP detect &
install the SCSI card and then run the Driver/Setup package for the
scanner - finally plug the scanner in and let XP install it.

Yes I did.

Anyway, I re-booted and removed every blasted entry containing the
scanner. When I was done and then immediately looked at Device
Manager, Lo - 'Imaging Devices' was gone as were all the duplicative
entries under it. Then I removed both SCSI entries I had, and
rebooted (with scanner still OFF). Progress .... No 'new hardware
found wizard' window - finally gone! System did recognize the SCSI
card and re-installed the drivers, including the same two Device
Manager entries.

When I rebooted with the scanner on, it came up with the 'new hardware
wizard' (no surprise there), but when I tried canceling, the window
would not go away as before! Then I looked at Device Manager, and the
'Imaging Devices' is back with SEVEN UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
entries plus one UMAX Powerlook II entry. Doesn't make sense, since I
did not install any scanner drivers.

Wouldn't you know though, now Magicscan (which I had left on the
system) as well as Vuescan and Vistascan all work! The scanner scans
just fine.

Now then - All I need to do is get rid of the danged 'new hardware
found' window. Its a pain - by coming up and staying up on every
boot.

Any ideas?

Thanks for all your advice and help
