Ultimate: machine restarts spontaneously..

hi,

I'm on Vista Ultimate (not upgrade, new machine) and machine is doing
something very weird.. it restarts spontaneously every hour or so.. it
doesn't go into 'sleep' or 'hibernate' mode, it just restarts.. when
it's booting up again you get this black screen that says, "machine was
not shut down properly..." etc... then Windows starts normally..

I had thought problem might be caused by AVG anti-virus sw, which I
installed a few nights ago (and this started happening day after I
installed it..) so I un-installed it this morning.. but as soon as I was
done un-installing machine restarted again!!

I've had this machine for almost a month now, but this started happening
just a few nights ago......:(

would appreciate suggestions... thank you very much....

Do you get a BSOD then reboot?
Or does it just look like you hit the reset button?

Here are a couple of things to try

This may sound strange but try disabling any screen saver.
Just set you power to turn off the monitor after 15 min or so.
Disable Sleep and/or hibernate also.

Set you HD's to turn off 5 or 10 min's after the monitor.

Spontaneous reboots usually indicate a fatal error in the system. These are
normally hardware related.

Normally, you should see a blue screen error message, but this will not
happen if you have the option to restart on error selected.

Open Control Panel/System/Advanced System Settings/Startup and Recovery.
Click the Settings Button. In the System Failure section, remove the check
mark from the "Automatically Restart" option.

Apply/OK.

The next time the error occurs, you should see a blue screen error appear.
Be sure to write down the first few lines on the error screen and post that
information back here in a reply.

I will definitely do so if I ever see the blue screen.. (I rebooted
right after I did what you said and I didn't get the blue screen..)

I think your solution worked.. the machine hasn't restarted in over an
hour.. (I think.....;)

thank you very much for your help...
