Strange Vista Ultimate hang at startup

I have had a hang during startup on my Vista Ultimate machine for the last
few months and have not resolved the problem yet. At first boot-up in the
morning, the machine will work through until the black screen with
"microsoft" at the bottom, and the scrolling bar. The bar will scroll
through a few times then freeze. I have left it up to 2 hours and it goes
not further.
I hit the system reset button on my case and restart - without incident. I
can restart at any time during the day - also without incident. I can turn
off the machine for several hours and boot up again - without incident. It
only happens the very first boot up in the morning.
I thought it must be a driver since my USB port flashes just before the
freeze, but disconnecting all USB devices before start up didn't change the
situation. I also ran startup repair and it found no problems.
Any suggestions on how to isolate the problem would be greatly appreciated.

disable everything possible in the startup routine
add back 1 thing at a time until you find what is hanging
that is a lot of rebooting sometimes...but if you find the culprit...
