I need to know what would be the best machine for using this dev environment
for being the most productive. (Dual core or Quad core)?

I need to plot out systems for some of our developers and I was wondering if
any one could give out system specs.

Whatever you get now it will be outdated at the end of the year. Well maybe
not outdated but there will be something better for sure.

Currently in my office we are running on DELL Precision PWS670
workstation, Dual Xeon 2 GB RAM. These are been around for a year at least
and they work fine with XP , VS 03/05 and SQL 2K5

My machine at home is using a C2D 6600 with 2 GB ram and it does run great
too.

I'm not planning to upgrade to Vista anytime soon though.

So the botton line is buy the best you can and get at least 2 GB RAM !!!

What about Workstations vs Laptops. More speed the better since Laptops have
slow hard drives?

Personally I do not like laptop, I prefer a workstation that I can upgrade
during time. The last machine lasted me for almost 4 years upgrading parts
as needed.

And to be honest with you the only reason I upgraded it (it was a P4 2.8 2
GB RAM ) was because of gaming :) , I got my self a shiny new 24" Dell
monitor and I needed a new computer to play :)

I never rebuild until the available speed is double. You probably can't
perceive the difference unless it's double CPU speed, but you CAN see the
difference in the number of cores or CPUs.

Good luck with your project,

They do have 7200 rpm drives for the laptops, but they are smaller capacity
than the slower ones. The bigger drives available are 5400rpm. I use a Dell
Latitude that's about 2 years old with 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.
It still runs okay, but I'm sure the graphics card does not support Vista.
So I have been considering buying an Inspiron E1505 (because the Latitudes
are not Vista-capable yet), fully packed to the gills. I'd buy the fastest
one possible with as much memory as possible.

I don't have room for a desktop, and I like to be able to take my laptop
with me to show my work or if I am collaborating with someone else. In the
last place I worked, people took their laptops home so they could
telecommute, or log in to work if there was a problem. Desktops are easier
to upgrade, and have more disk space capability w/o using an external hard
drive. It just depends on what you want.

My laptop also supports dual monitors, so when I'm at home, I have a 20.1"
monitor that I connect to it and use as a second monitor. I love that. You
can never have enough real estate.

That's my 2 cents' worth.

oh does robin not have room at home for a desktop

maybe you could go on craigslist and get this thing called an
apartment instead of living in a box on the side of the street

for me; I would ignore this whole Dual Core _CRAP_ and get the fastest
single core available

..NET doesn't work on multiple cores
