Typing problem with Outlook 2007 RTM

I've found a rather annoying bug in Outlook 2007 RTM. When I'm typing
an E-mail message, certain keys and key combinations seem to stop
working, including:

- Home
- End
- Ctrl+Home
- Ctrl + End
- Ctrl + (any arrow key)

These keys work fine sometimes, but they frequently stop working as I'm
typing. I can get them working again by hitting another key (such as
typing a letter, hitting backspace, etc) or by clicking somewhere in
the else in the window to move the mouse cursor.

This problem does not occur with any other program. I frequently use
Word 2007, Visual Studio, and numerous other editors where I frequently
use the same keys. This problem also did not occur in Outlook 2003.

Has anyone else seen this problem or have any suggestions on how I
might fix it?

build from scratch or upgraded from a previous version of Outlook or even

was a stuck key, it would be manifesting itself in Visual Studio. It
occurs only in Outlook.

Outlook 2007 immediately after upgrade.

Are yu running any add-in in Outlook? Disable them as they are most likely
not compatible with this release yet. Additionally I would recommend
resetting the toolbar settings and add-ins registry cache by renaming
outcmd.dat and extend.dat to .old. If that doesn't help give it a go with a
new mail profile or an additional one for testing purposes;

Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately that didn't help. The
behavior is the same even after disabling all the add-ins (even the
Microsoft ones), resetting the toolbar settings, and creating a new
profile.

I did do a little more experimentation and obvservation so that I can
hopefully describe this behavior better:

- While typing an E-mail, the mentioned navigation keys randomly stop
working, *but only for a few seconds*. I hadn't tried it before, but
if I keep mashing the keys for about 2-3 seconds, they start working
again. During this time, the cursor is still blinking, so I don't
think Outlook itself is freezing. I can also immediately press any
other key on the keyboard and get an instant response. Task manager
shows no unusual activity while this is occuring.
- I can randomly mash keys on my keyboard, and there is never a pause.
The only time this freeze occurs is when I hit one of those navigation
keys, and even then it isn't a freeze, its just like those keys aren't
responding for a couple of seconds.
- Once the navigation keys start working, they will not stop working
until I type something else. Once they unfreeze, I can hit any
combination of them in any order and they will respond normally.
- I can reproduce the problem very easily by hitting Ctrl+left arrow
while typing space characters (or any other character for that matter).
Sometimes the key combination will work as expected, but very
frequently it will freeze as described above.

I unfortunately do not have another machine that I can upgrade to
Outlook 2007 at this time to see if I can reproduct it on another
computer.

I should add that I tried the exact same set of experiments (mashing
keys, hitting random navigation key combinations, etc) in Visual
Studio, Notepad, Word 2007, and a text box in Firefox and never had any
problem.

At that specific time interval could it be doing an auto-save or handling an
automatic send/receive?

I guess it is possible that it is doing an auto-save, but I can
reproduce this problem multiple times within a 10 second interval.
Surely it isn't auto-saving that often. And since it doesn't occur
when I'm mashing other random keys, I doubt that is the problem (unless
those key combinations are somehow triggering an auto-save). It isn't
doing a send/receive, either.

Anyone have anything else to try? Is there somewhere else I
could/should check for help? I'm still getting this probably
constantly in Outlook 2007. It's bad enough that I'm now considering
just downgrading to Outlook 2003.

when I'm mashing other random keys, I doubt that is the problem (unless
those key combinations are somehow triggering an auto-save). It isn't
doing a send/receive, either.

Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately that didn't help. The
behavior is the same even after disabling all the add-ins (even the
Microsoft ones), resetting the toolbar settings, and creating a new
profile.

I did do a little more experimentation and obvservation so that I can
hopefully describe this behavior better:

- While typing an E-mail, the mentioned navigation keys randomly stop
working, *but only for a few seconds*. I hadn't tried it before, but
if I keep mashing the keys for about 2-3 seconds, they start working
again. During this time, the cursor is still blinking, so I don't
think Outlook itself is freezing. I can also immediately press any
other key on the keyboard and get an instant response. Task manager
shows no unusual activity while this is occuring.
- I can randomly mash keys on my keyboard, and there is never a pause.
The only time this freeze occurs is when I hit one of those navigation
keys, and even then it isn't a freeze, its just like those keys aren't
responding for a couple of seconds.
- Once the navigation keys start working, they will not stop working
until I type something else. Once they unfreeze, I can hit any
combination of them in any order and they will respond normally.
- I can reproduce the problem very easily by hitting Ctrl+left arrow
while typing space characters (or any other character for that matter).
Sometimes the key combination will work as expected, but very
frequently it will freeze as described above.

I unfortunately do not have another machine that I can upgrade to
Outlook 2007 at this time to see if I can reproduct it on another
computer.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. I tend to make
very frequent revisions to E-mails a I'm typing them, so these
navigation keys are ones that I use quite often.

Are yu running any add-in in Outlook? Disable them as they are most
likely
not compatible with this release yet. Additionally I would recommend
resetting the toolbar settings and add-ins registry cache by renaming
outcmd.dat and extend.dat to .old. If that doesn't help give it a go

new mail profile or an additional one for testing purposes;

As I said, this does not happen with any other programs on this
computer. I spend the vast majority of my day writing code, so if
it
was a stuck key, it would be manifesting itself in Visual Studio.
It
occurs only in Outlook.

This was an upgrade install from Outlook 2003. I never experienced
this problem with Outlook 2003, but I started experiencing it in
Outlook 2007 immediately after upgrade.

I've found a rather annoying bug in Outlook 2007 RTM. When I'm
typing
an E-mail message, certain keys and key combinations seem to stop
working, including:

- Home
- End
- Ctrl+Home
- Ctrl + End
- Ctrl + (any arrow key)

These keys work fine sometimes, but they frequently stop working
as
I'm
typing. I can get them working again by hitting another key
(such
as
typing a letter, hitting backspace, etc) or by clicking somewhere
in
the else in the window to move the mouse cursor.

This problem does not occur with any other program. I frequently
use
Word 2007, Visual Studio, and numerous other editors where I
frequently
use the same keys. This problem also did not occur in Outlook
2003.

Has anyone else seen this problem or have any suggestions on how
I
might fix it?

After returning to work (where I'm running Outlook 2007) from my
holiday vacation, I find that I'm still having the exact same problem
with Outlook, and that there are no new suggestions on what I can try.
I'm pretty desperate here. I don't want to downgrade back to Office
2003, and I don't really want to switch to Thunderbird or some other
3rd party E-mail client, but the inability to type an E-mail without
interruption is unacceptable. If *anyone* has *any* ideas on what I
might try, please let me know (and soon).

I have also run into this problem. I am currently unable to type four
letters in Outlook 2007 (new mail message) - "t, h, c, v". However, I
am able to type the upper-case letters.

I tried this in a new task, new note and experienced the same issue.

I thought my keyboard was going bad - so I replaced it. I had also
noticed this when just using my laptop keyboard (no docking station).

dear all
i face thw same problem when i change writing language to arabic i have to
start withspace inorder to accept writing then if i delay in typing it stop
accepting any new leters until i press space again and as mentioned it is
realy mess and not acceptable, note that i did not have this problem with
2007 beta but when upgrade to 2007 pro it starsted

Hi Matt (and all others),

I have had this annoying problem for a while and it was really
freaking me out, but finally I managed to find out what's wrong:

First I uninstalled Windows Desktop Search (which functioned pretty
crappy anyway, both in Outlook and in the file system) and this solved
my problem partly, the problem now occured more seldom but still the
Ctrl-Arrow did not work well. When monitoring the Task Manager, I saw
that an IntelliSense program for T-SQL that I had installed (SQLPrompt
from RedGate, a nice product BTW) was increasing the CPU with a couple
of percents. When also turning this off, the problem was gone. I'm
unleashed!

Hope this'll work for you as well.
