Type MS Word file name show in slow motion

When I type a new file name and save onto the server, the "MS Word Save As"
box will show the new file name in slow motion. That's look like show first
character and then wait 0.5 second to show 2nd character, another 0.5 second
to show 3rd... until the full name displayed. After showed the file name,
it saves very quick.

The problem does not find if I save the document locally.

But I can open and locate the server's word document very quick but only
save in very slow. I checked the server is not busy. Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

Under Tools, Options, File Locations are you using UNC paths or mapped
drives. Office does not like working with mapped drives, so change the UNC
paths. That should resolve the problem.

Thanks for your reply.

All the drive letter show under "File Locations" is local drive (C and D)
but we usually save the document in network server. As per your advise, I
did a test. I find that no matter I use UNC or mapped network drives, the
show character speed is same, very slow.

Please noted that I mean slow is "ONLY" type the new unsaved file name, NOT
show the existing files under the particular location. BUT this problem
does not happen when I save file locally.

Does setting the default Documents location to the network folder using UNC
paths make any difference to the problem?

No. All of them set as "C:\....." OR "D:\...." (I have 2 partition,
therefore both C & D are local drive letter)

Hi,

We are having exactly the same problem. Window 2000 SP4 + all window
update patches installed. Office 2000 with all office update patches
Windows 2000 file server, Active dir domain. etc.

When saving or "saving as" typing in the field for the file name i
extremely slow. No other network problems - performance in other apps
file opens, etc. are all fast.

Performance is good if we set default docs to local drive. Slow if w
save to the network - doesn't matter if we specify UNC path or mappe
drive.

I've searched the web & this thread is the only mention I can find o
this problem.

Has anyone found out anything else about this?
