Two TOCs in one document

From another question I posted recently, I learned that it's supposed to be
possible to generate more than one TOC in a document. I'd like to have one
TOC generated from heading styles. I'd like to mark other areas and have
another TOC generated from them. I'm using alt-shift-O to mark the sections
and telling it that I want these in Table of Contents A. But I don't see how
to make TOC A be generated.

TOCs are fields, you can just type the field and update it.

You'll find a tutorial here on how to construct the field to get what you
want--the question you want (partial table of contents) is about halfway
down but I think you will have to at least skim the earlier portions for it
to make sense.

A further question: what about the TC field where you don't have to use
headings? I'd like to be able to generate a TOC using fields that I mark. Is
this possible?

To create a table of contents from TC fields, do the following: In the
Index and Tables dialog box, click Options. Under "Build table of
contents from", check the option to use "Table entry fields", and
clear the other options. Click OK to close the Options dialog box, and
then click OK again to insert the new TOC. If Word wants to replace
the existing TOC, say no.

Thanks, this was very helpful. I finally was able to generate a table of
contents from fields rather than headings.

The thing I have not been able to do is generate a table of contents C and
A. Is this only used when generating a table from headings?

Assuming that you are referring to the "Table identifier" chosen in
the Mark Table of Contents Entry dialog box, you need the following
TOC field codes: { TOC \f C \h } (for TC fields marked with a "C"
identifier) and { TOC \f A \h } (for TC fields with a "A" identifier).
To see field codes in a document, press Alt+F9. Modify the code as
desired. Press F9 to update (and, as always, make sure you update the
entire TOC, not just page numbers). When you are done, press Alt+F9
again to re-display field results.
