outline numbering in word TOC

I have a Word 2007 doc with Heading level styles 1-6. The Heading styles use
section numbering (example: 2.3.5.6 Conveyor Basics)

I have generated a TOC using the Insert Table of Contents command. I applied
the desired formating to each TOC level through the dialog box.

When generating the TOC, Word applies the desired style to the heading text,
however it uses the corresponding heading style for the heading section
numbering.

So I have, for instance 2.3.5.6 Conveyor Basics
with the "2.3.5.6" formated in Bolt Arial 11 (per heading level 4 style) and
"Conveyor Basics" formatted in Plain Calibri 10 (per TOC 4 style).

Why??

thank you!

If the number formatting is applied directly to the headings rather than as
part of the style, it will be picked up by the TOC. This *may* include
formatting applied by the Bullets and Numbering formatting (as opposed to
the Default Paragraph Font); that is, if you have applied formatting to the
number through the Numbering dialog, it may qualify as "direct" formatting.
