two sperate page numbers

I am working on a very large document and the department head would like to
have it broken into two sets of page numbering.

First X of Y pages within each section and then an over-all page number for
the entire document. I have done some digging but can't find anything in the
help files that address this issue. Does anyone know how this can be done,
other than by inserting a manual page number once the entire document is
compiled?
