I am using Win XP-Home Edition (running Outlook Express 6). I have had a
continuing problem that seems to be associated with Windows upgrades and a
new problem that occurred this week after I installed new updates
(responding to the automatic install icon in my task bar that informed me
that updates were available -- the little gold shield).
(1) First, the new problem - Almost all of my newsgroups in Outlook Express
were adversely affected after I downloaded and installed the new Win XP
updates. I had a great many threads marked in a number of NGs to watch. They
were configured so that these threads showed in red and were at the top of
the list when I opened a NG. Everything worked perfectly *before* installing
the updates. However, as soon as I opened any NG that showed in red *after*
installing the updates, *all* marked messages suddenly disappeared from the
screen. With some NGs, as soon as I clicked on a message -- in this case,
they were new messages that had never been read and that had been posted
today -- a line appeared through them along with the message that this
message "is no longer available on the server." I went to the Microsoft site
and scanned to see if I had missed any updates, but the "express install" (I
think that's the term) feature indicated that there were no additional
updates. I then used Restore Points to go back in time previous to
downloading the updates. Part of the problem was then corrected - many (but
not all) of the NGs reverted the correct state where they showed "watch"
threads in red. However, some of the watched threads did not reappear, and I
continue to have the problem in some newsgroups with the message that it "is
no longer available." Moreover, I can't even search for some of the missing
threads manually because some are too old (not really old in age, but with
active NGs there are too many messages for the maximum setting that Outlook
will permit). For example, many of the threads I had marked with diabetes
information are no longer available to me.
What is going on? How can I prevent this, and is there any way to get
Outlook to download older messages? Moreover, I now have the message that
"updates are ready" because I used Restore Points to prevent the new updates
that caused the problem - but I will have no way of knowing when "other"
updates are available. (I hope all that makes sense!)
(2) Second - I also have a problem that has continued for some time now. I
posted a message about this problem a few weeks ago. The solution was that
one of the updates had not been downloaded, even though I get automatic
messages to download updates. I went to MS, scanned, found that there were
some additional updates, and downloaded them. That corrected the problem --
but only for about 2 weeks! Now the problem is back, and when I scanned, I
got the message from MS that there are no updates available for my computer.
(That was before I went "backward in time," as explained under #1 above.)
The problem in this case is that I constantly receive a message telling me
that a pop-up has been blocked, accompanied by an annoying "ring." Worse,
whatever I was working with in the left-hand frame (Favorites, for example)
is closed and replaced by the message with the MS gold shield informing me
that it has blocked something "to protect my security." I can see the value
in the pop-up blocker if it would run in the background, but it is annoying
and distracting when the announcement pops up over and over again like this.
I followed the instructions given. That is, I went to Tools>Pop-Up
Blocker>Pop-Up Blocker Settings and unchecked both "play a sound when a
pop-up is blocked" and "show information bar when a pop-up is blocked." That
had no effect. I also checked several times to make sure that the boxes
remain unchecked, and everything appears correct. Nevertheless, this
annoying intrusion occurs consistently, and most of the pages it occurs on
are rather ordinary -- for example, it happens almost every time I go to
CNN.com. Filter level is set at Medium (the default). I would rather turn
this "protection" off and go back to one of my old pop-up protect programs
(that worked *very* well and simply showed a small icon in the task bar)
than to put up with this, but there was also a MS message that I would have
to do this for "every type" of use - and I don't have any idea what that
would mean. I also checked in Control Panel, but did not see any settings
that looked helpful.
Can anyone help? Both of these problems seem to be associated directly with
recent Win XP upgrades.
