two network addresses

I have a Windows XP PC connected to the Internet with one NIC and a standard
DSL modem ( this PC was once connected through a router). When I use
ipconfig I get 2 ip addresses -
10.0.0.12
180.178.56.16

Why does the first address appear?
Can I eliminate it somehow?

Regards

Open the NIC connection's properties and double click "Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)". Look for and remove a static IP address of
10.0.0.12 on the General tab or after clicking the Advanced button.
