XP - acquiring ip address...

Hello,

I'm trying to get my verizon DSL modem directly connected to my XP Pro.
SP2 pc. There is no router involved, it's just a straight modem to
network card setup.

I've set the "Obtain IP address automatically" option and "Obtain DNS
server address automatically". It just hangs on "acquiring network
address" and then defaults to "limited or no connectivity". I've gone
into "services" and made sure DHCP client is set to "automatic". I've
also tried power cycling my modem down for 5 minutes and did the
"ipconfig /release,ipconfig /flushdns,ipconfig /renew" options.
Nothing seems to work.

I know it's not my nic inside my XP box because I can connect to the
internet just fine with my linux box acting as a router for my XP box.
The only way I can get my XP box connected to the internet is if I give
it a static ip and a couple dns server ip addresses and set up my linux
box to act as a router. Linux has no trouble acquiring an ip from
verizon. This works just fine. What I can't do is setup my XP box to
connect directly to the modem and get an IP address from verizon.

Does anybody have any advice? Thank you for your time.

If you've already gotten your service working, using another computer, then I'll
bet 2 to 1 that you have a MAC address registration problem.

How did you fix this. I have similar problem with 'Acquiring Network
Address'. DHCP is active and automatic. How do I know if it is a MAC address
issue?

Tony,

You can identify a MAC address block in several ways. First, by checking with
other customers of your ISP - does your ISP use MAC address verification? If
so, what's the best way to reset it? Second, by experimentation, which can be
done in a couple ways, as I outline in my article.

Hello TonyG,

I took Chuck's advice about the problem being a MAC address issue.
Chuck pointed out that if I was able to get an address from my linux
box, then the issue would most likley be a MAC address conflict with
the nic in my xp box. I dug up my old router and simply changed the
"MAC address clone option" to the MAC address to that of the nic inside
my linux box. With the router directly connected to my modem now,
everything is working perfectly.
