Two IP Address and one NIC

T

Tirumala

Hello,
I have a 2 Systems connected in a Lan
Their IP addresses are 192.168.0.1 and 2
and subnet mask 255.255.255.248

Recently I got a new cable Internet connection. They installed the
connection in 192.168.0.1 in the same NIC. They changed my IP to 172.17.6.34
and Subnet mask to 255.255.0.0. But with this I was not able to access the
other system. So I added the old IP address in my Advanced setting tab. So
now I assigned two Ip address to one NIC.

Iam able to ping the other system. The other system can access the internet
through proxy but Iam not able to browse or find the other computer In my
network neighbourhood.

Please help

Thank You,
Tirumala

Triumala,

You need to install another NIC in your PC with two
addresses, activate Internet Connection Sharing on that
computer and assign the internal IP address 192.168.0.1 to
the second Nitwork Interface Card you added. Then your 2-
NIC computer will act as a internet router for your second
computer at 102.168.0.2 and will assign its address
automatically therough DHCP. If you do not wish to do this
you must purchase an internet router such as one of
Linksys' products and put it after your cable or DSL modem
and before your two computers. The router will have the
172.17.6.34 as the WAN side address and will hand out the
192.168.1.xxx series addresses via DHCP on the LAN side of
the connection. Just follow the instructions to set it up,
they are very specific. Questions? Drop me an emai.

Rich

Assigning two IP addresses isn't the correct way to handle
this problem. The best way to handle this is to either
install a second NIC and add your IP address for the local
network on it, or set up a router between your PC and the
internet service with the IP address, subnet mask, and any
logon info your computer currently broadcasts, and allow
both PCs to pull IP addresses from that router. The
second of these is the best option since it allows both
PCs to access the net, but that's your call.
