Two Ethernet Adapters - One Null

When I execute the "command" then "ipconfig" commands at Start | Run, I see
two ethernet adaptor report forms.

0 Ethernet adapter:

IP Address.....: 0.0.0.0
Subset Mask.....: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway..: (blank)

1 Ethernet adapter:

IP Address.....: 192.168.0.4
Subset Mask.....: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway...: (another number similar to the 1st)

My machine is equipped for infrared but it's disabled. I'm trying to
reconnect to the LAN I made two years ago but am having a lot of trouble.
(See thread "IP Addresses on LAN" if interested). Can someone please tell me
if this first report of an Ethernet adapter (the null adaptor . no
addresses) should be there? If not, how do I remove it?

Take a look at the Control Panel Network Connection.
If there is only one Icon for LAN connection (does not matter what the
number is) then you can ignore the Bogus connection shows with ipconfig.
In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following
these steps.
Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager.
Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there
is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation.

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS:

every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.
Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and

This is a Windows XP news group, but the commands and the output that
you give look like what I'd expect in Windows 98. What does your
computer have?

In Windows 98, the first adapter is probably the dial-up adapter,
which only has an IP address when you're connected to the Internet
over the telephone. That adapter isn't involved in LAN networking.

The target computer is an XP, Steve, but the issue I described did appear on
the 98SE. I noticed it while checking everything and thought it might
somehow be related since I've changed the computer name and newsgroup as
well as run the network wizzard several times. I'm comfortable with your
explanation; it probably is related to a dial-up modem. the machine is a
portable. Thanks for the help.
