two directories

Have had XP installed for some time. Updates would not install so ignored
them. Finally decided to do so and I messed up the OS. Tried repairing,
restoring another date and anything I could imagine to no avail. Finally
reinstalled XP in a WIN directory and all is working fine except had to
reinstall programs for the registry ID's. Question......can I delete the
WINDOWS directory or can I rename the WIN directory without harming what is
working now? Would like to clear up the hard drive.
 
you probably can delete the windows dir, but not rename the win dir
 
No and that is what is spooking me. Everything seems to be working fine but
the WINDOWS directory is just sitting there. Would that cause a problem down
the road. Also, when I boot up there are TWO XP's to pick from highlighted.
It is recognizng TWO directories but works from the new one I named WIN
