TweakUI

A

ariana

PC running XP Home

On my own user account, I can make drives visible/invisible, using TweakUI.
When another user logs on, all the drives on my PC are visible and there is
no "Drives" branch shown in TweakUI.

I thought I would start by uninstalling and then installing the latest
TweakUI - just in case!

I ran Regedit and set "24" in the first column of NoDrives as I want to hide
drives D+E.

When I restarted the PC, there was no difference - my account and my
husband's account could not see the D+E drives but the Friends user account
(Limited) could!

When I started up my PC this morning, the "24" had reset itself to "18" in
the registry!

I can't think what else to try. Any ideas, please?

TweakUI writes to the "NoDrives" value in the current user registry hive (per-user setting). If you need to apply the setting to other user profiles, you may export the following branch to a REG file. Then edit the REG file using Notepad, and delete all other values except "NoDrives"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Thanks for your reply, Ramesh

I am not too familiar with the Registry but in my own user profile, I have
the NoDrives set to 24 00 00 00 as I want to hide drives D + E.
I think that is correct although for some reason, it had changed to 18 00 00
00 overnight! The drives are hidden.

In my husband's user profile, it is set the same and the drives are hidden.

In the Friends profile, there is no NoDrives and I can see the D+E drives. I
understand that you mean that I should add a NoDrives to this user account.
It already has
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
but that holds just an NoDriveTypeAutoRun value.

I am a bit lost about exporting to a REG file so would appreciate a
step-by-step instruction of what I should do.

TIA.

Hello again, Ramesh. I have been trying what you suggested and now have a
REG file with includes the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDrives"=hex:24,00,00,00

I am not sure what to do now - do I open the Friends profile and import/copy
this?

Thanks

R

Ramesh, MS-MVP

Yes. Simply double-click the REG file from the other user account.

I must be missing something. I saved the REG file to my C: drive and logged
off.
I then opened my Friends (Limited) profile and double-clicked on the REG
file.
I got the message:
"Cannot import C:\Explorer.reg. Not all data was successfully written to the
registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

Yes. Simply double-click the REG file from the other user account.

Might be a registry permissions problem. It appears that limited users can't write to that registry location by default. BTW, loading the hive should have worked also.
