I can't automatically rebooy anymore

Michael M

I removed TweakUI from my computer because I had to tell it each time it
rebooted to allow an automatic
reboot with me as Administrator. Before I rebooted, I read somewhere that
you HAD to have a TweakUI password established in order for this to happen.
So I set a password up in TweakUI

NOW, however, my machine only boots to this error message "The System could
not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct (how do I
do that?), then type your password again.
Letters in passwords must be typed using correct case."

If I then click the OK buttom, it logs me in automatically as Michael (me)
and NOT as the Aministrator (me, also!) ...

I uninstalled TweakUI, but In still get the above error message, which I had
never gotten in the past.

NOW how can I get my computer back to the old days when I just tell it to
reboot and when I came back, it has TOTALLY rebootted itself and is all
ready to go ... thanks! .... Michael

You may be able to use System Restore to take you back to before you
added the password. If you are using Norton post again for further
advice.

I have TweakUi installed and it works fine. However, I have never felt
the need to password protect a log on to a home computer.

Hope this helps.

TweakUI is just an easy way to make changes to the registry. Uninstalling
it will remove the program, but not necessarily roll back any tweaks you'd
made to the registry.

The following MSKB article details where the registry entries for automatic
login are located and how to modify them:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231

I would follow these steps to locate the registry entry and modify it to
include the correct information. Be sure to to make a backup of your
registry before monkeying around with it (there's a link to how to do that
in the article).

There are other practical reasons for the password.

For example, by default, and for valid security reasons, the Windows Task
Scheduler will not run a task on a local account that does not have a
password. So, without the password, backups that rely on the Task
Scheduler won't run.

You can alter this behaviour, but as there is a good reason for it being
this way, it's best to leave it and add the password.

In low-risk installations, you can set the password and the hint to the same
as the user name, to make it easier for the user to remember. Then, set
autologon.

You have explained a long standing mystery. Why I have never succeeded
in scheduling the running of Disk Defragmenter. The inability to
schedule a task has never been a problem but thanks for filling a blank
in my information database.

In general terms I hate passwords because nowadays I have difficulty
remembering what they are. They can be a tremendous source of
frustration <ugh>.
