I had TweakUI for XP (part of the Powertoys apps)
installed and now the shortcut in the Start Menu is gone
so I can't access it. I checked in Add/Remove Programs
and the program is still in there. I then entered:
\windows\system32\tweakui.exe in RUN and nothing was
found. I tried uninstalling the program in Add/Remove
Programs but get a blank window and the program is still
listed. Anybody have a clue what's going on? FYI, at one
time I had another tweak app, TweakIE, installed at the
same time as TweakUI. I removed it a while ago. Thanks
for any help!

Hi,

Remove the reference from here and then re-install it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

And/or: Start/Run

%windir%\rundll32.exe syssetup.dll,SetupInfObjectInstallAction
DefaultUninstall 4 %windir%\Inf\Tweakui.Inf

New TweakUI version out: 2.10.0.0 for XP SP1 - http://tinyurl.com/h8zs

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Tip:

Add TweakUI Icon to the Control Panel

Hi Kelly, thanks for the reply. I'm a newbie so please
bear with me. I followed the path you first gave me
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE...etc.) by using RUN>REGEDIT to get
into the registry. I found TweakUI 2.10 in there, now I
want to be sure I'm following your instructions
correctly: I delete that TweakUI I found there and I'm
done & it should be removed from the system and not show
up in Add/Remove Programs? Do I need to restart the
system after removing it? Then if I want to reinstall
TweakUI I can download and install it again? Thanks for
your help- very helpful! - b smile

I think something has done a botched uninstall on it. What I would do
is get a new download (it isn't big) and install it again - if you have
installed XP SP1
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Kelly- also, should I do the next suggestion you made,
the And/or: Start/Run
%windir%\rundll32.exe...etc? If so, I type it in exactly
as it appears, with spacing as it appears? Thanks!

Alex, Thanks. I have a new system with SP1 installed. I'm
not sure I want to install over a possibly existing
TweakUI and/or its files.

Hi,

Just simply try to reinstall it. Good luck!

It will install fine over any previous XP version, if you use that 'for
SP1' download

Well, that's interesting, all references to my posts in
this thread with MVP Kelly are gone!? I wanted to say
that I tried his/her instructions about removing TweakUI
again from the registry and reinstalling TweakUI (I first
back-ed up the Local_Machine branch to a file on my
desktop. )from a new download. When I did that and
installed it, it showed up in Add/Remove Programs, as
well as in my Programs listing under Powertools for XP.
When I clicked on the icon in Programs, though, I got an
error message saying a shortcut was missing and it
couldn't find it.??? I tried uninstalling TweakUI again
from Add/Remove Programs- got the empty window again.
Then I went thru the steps to remove the reference in the
Resigstry successfully- no sign of it in my system. Think
I'll just forget about installing the stupid thing now!
(grin) Would ahving the backed-up registry on my desktop
somehow interfer with a clean install? Thanks if you are
still out there Kelly! If not, I tried to thank you for
your help!

Ok, thanks for that. See my post to Kelly about current
futile status with installing TweakUI! Funny how the
posts between us disappeared??

Problem solved! I removed TweakUI reference from
registry, didn't have a saved backup registry file in the
computer as before & after downloading/installing TweakUI
again it installed fine. Whew. Thanks for all help. -b
