TweakUI for XP Produces Registry Error

P

Puff

I use TweakUI for XP SP 2, and I was having trouble keeping the folder
settings.
So, I opened the registry and looked at what TweakUI had entered. It was
NOT the same as what Microsoft had recommended on their website.
The numbers were correct and the placement were correct, BUT, where the
correct way to have the entries is BagMRU Size, TweakUI has it entered it as
Bag MRU Size - with a space inbetween the Bag and the MRU.
After hand correcting this, my folders are now keeping their settings.
Is there anyone else that has noticed this error, and if so, is there any way
to advise Microsoft's TweakUI developers of this of this error in their
program?
Thanks!

TweakUI was not written by MS, it's not part of Windows, and
MS doesn't support it:

oys.mspx

I thought that the original PowerToys were written after-hours and
unofficially by MS programmers and released via MS's web site as a
courtesy to customers. I understand that MS has never supported
them but they're still distributed via MS's web site. What has
always puzzled me is why MS never incorporated the many nifty toys
into base Windows. It isn't that these things are necessarily
dangerous, they are, in my view, worthwhile additions to the O/S
and should be supported.

Not entirely correct. TweakUI (and other powertoys) are written by
Microsoft programmers. Microsoft wrote them, Microsoft makes them
available, but Microsoft does not SUPPORT them. At many companies,
their employees write up utilities that are handy for their own use.
Often they might roll these up into a package that they make available
to their customers. I've often seen such packages show up for UNIX
(IBM AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, etc.). They are written by the company but
they are provided as-is.

If you use a hex editor on TweakUI.exe, you will see that Microsoft is
identified as the company, owner, and even has their Verisign cert
recorded.

Hi all!
I love how the buck gets passed "If it looks like a duck, waddles like a
duck and quacks like a duck, Microsoft says it's a chicken and we didn't do
it!" (LOL)
OH WELL :(

Ramesh,
Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for.
Kelly's site is awesome!

Your post seemsto be about if anyone else noticed the error and if there
was any way to notify developers.
Maybe they would find it interesting or funny too! If they wanted they
could avoid the error in the next release (if any), too.
The replies you got ... well it's great that they know Microsoft does not
support TweakUI, and i see how this has relevence in whether notifying
anyone would do more than be an interesting bit of trivia... but it seems
they are replying in defense of Microsoft.
That's not really it...i think they just like to be the first to show that
they know something, but they did not notice (or bother to look for
themselves out of interest) the error...
anyway, MY question is...
Where is the entry to check? I can search but i try to manage my time :D

To Phil Clemence:
It gets frustrating when you email Microsoft, they tell you to submit to the
support page, then not
being able to use it as your "2" FREE supports were used up right after XP
home came out.
Then coming here, or others groups and being told that Microsoft doesn't own
or support a product that they have their name associated with "Microsoft
PowerToys for Windows XP", and having the
disclaimer on their site:
"Note: We take great care to ensure that PowerToys work as they should, but
they are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft. For this
reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about
PowerToys."
Someone HAS TO take responsibility for something! Not only in this instance,
but it seems in
ALL instances of our lives now a days. We seem to be living by the "pass the
buck" more
and more each day.
I don't understand why, if Microsoft does not support this, why they can not
add to that disclaimer who does support their Power Tools! THEN a person like
myself can email them directly, telling them
that I noticed their oops. That seems so much less frustrating and a heck of
a lot more logical!
Don't you think?

Ok I did a ergedit on BagMRU Size and found two uses in two different locarions. Each use had it
both ways, "BagMRU Size" and "Bag MRU Size" with different D words for each.

You may think that seems less frustrating and more logical, but that doesn't
change the fact that no one supports Power Toys.

oh.. well it is a shame that no one really DOES support it.
But it was free, after all.
As the people here say, we can't expect those indiviuals to support it..
and Microsoft ? They probably donated some time to it while those guys
were fooling around :)
Now, if you want to argue that the capability of a UI for tweaking should
have been a part of Windows... well YEAH !! LOL!
