TweakUI - Common Dialogs - Places Bar

In TweakUI, under Common Dialogs there is something called Places bar. Mine
is set to "show default places." There are five slots for places that the
user can customize.

- What is the places bar, and where is it located?
- What are the 5 default "places"?
- What kinds of places can you put there instead?

Open the 'Save as' dialog box of any Windows application (Notepad, for example). The left bar with shortcuts to Desktop, My Documents, My Computer and so on is the Places Bar. You can customize that shortcuts from TweakUI.

So the 5 default places then are:
- Recent
- Desktop
- My Documents
- My Computer
- My Network Places

Can I make some of the places the root of a drive? If so, how do I type them
in? Is this correct syntax?

Let me know. Thanks.

I just downloaded TweakUI because I wanted to remove the places bar to give
more space for files in an explorer window. However, setting "hide places
bar" has no effect. I am using XP SP2.

hum, works fine here. I did need to close the app and reopen it to see
the change take effect (I tried notepad's "Save" as my experiment); places
bar does come and go as directed.

The Places bar does not appear in Windows Explorer. I think you have that
mixed up with the Folders pane or the Common Tasks pane, either of which can
appear in the left hand pane in Windows Explorer.

Places bar is on the left in this picture...

Common Tasks pane...
[[You can display hyperlinks to common tasks in the left pane of your folder
windows. The links provide quick access to file and folder management
activities and other places on your computer, such as My Computer, Shared
Documents, and My Network Places. Windows displays these links by default,
so they may already be displayed in your folders. If they are not, you can
use Folder Options to enable this feature.]]

Folders pane..
Shows the tree view, with the folders and the [+] sign in the left hand
pane.

tree view
[[A hierarchical representation of the folders, files, disk drives, and
other resources connected to a computer or network. For example, Windows
Explorer uses a tree view to display the resources that are attached to a
computer or a network.]]

Hi Wes

You were indeed correct. I dont know how I had overlooked the much more
obvious "Folder Options tab - General tab - Show common tasks in folders or
Use Windows classic folders" - there's even a small icon showing the effect.
And you dont need TweakUI to do this - just the Folder Options tab in
Explorer.

best regards
Tony

Tony,

If you have the Folders pane showing you can narrow it up a bit. Move your
cursor over the right hand border of the Folders pane until it turns in to a
double-headed arrow, left click and hold it while you drag the border to the
left. It won't go all the way, but you can create some more real estate in
the right hand pane.

You can't resize the Tasks pane.

On the Standard buttons toolbar is an icon that looks like two manila
folders called the Folders button. Click it to toggle between the Folders
and Tasks panes.

Hi Wesley again

Thanks for that. I also made another "discovery" - when the non-resizable
Task pane is up, if you drag either side of the window to narrower, you can
suddenly lose the task pane for that window as the files reduce to one
column, then you get two file columns back instead of the task pane. If the
folders pane is up, then this doesn't work - its just the files side that
shrinks.

Tony,

That is how I have My Documents set to open. The whole window is narrowed
so no left pane shows. It has 4 columns of Icons showing.

Lots of things you can do. You just need to experiment.

Keep having fun. :)
