Turning off the AutoPlay

E

Eric

Hello,

I am using an USB external Maxtor drive and every time I turn it on WinXP
ask me what I want to do with the content.
I setup the AutoPlay to take no action for this drive but the setting does
not stick. When I turn off the drive and turn it on again I get the same
popup window again.

Here's what I did to try to turn off the AutoPlay:

Turn on the Maxtor drive
Go to "My Computer"
Right-click on the Maxtor drive (Local Disk (F:) on my machine)
Select Properties
Go to the AutoPlay tab
Change the Actions from
Prompt me each time to choose an action
to
Select an action to perform: Take no action

Any idea?

Thank you

TweakUI for Windows Xp is available from Microsoft. It will enable to turn
off the autoplay function. Find it somewhere on this page:

I have an external Maxtor One Touch drive. The manual warns against
connecting the computer to a drive that is not powered on. The drive does
have a Power Management feature that puts the drive to sleep {the drive's
internal mechanical disks stop spinning} after a selected period of
inactivity. The period of inactivity can be set from 3 min to 5 hours.

But then, Maxtor makes a number of drives and yours may be different from
mine.

Don,

I have a One touch II but I didn't read the manual yet. What risk are they
talking about? Damaging the drive, loss of data?

Thanks.

Eric.

Yes, TweakUI will allow you to stop AutoPlay on a single drive.

Install and launch TweakUI. Go to My Computer - AutoPlay - Drives and
disable AutoPlay on the drive of your choice.

Microsoft PowerToys – Tweakui for WinXP: Ver. 2.10 requires WinXP SP1
and later
http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/home/downloads/powertoys.asp

TweakUI can be accessed from Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

I have One Touch I. In Chapter 3: Using Your Drive there is the triangle !
symbol that Maxtor uses for cautions. The statement is: "Connecting your
computer to a drive that is not powered on can cause your computer to behave
erratically or freeze." Since the caution is related to the operating system
and your Maxtor drive is not accessing its disks, I would not expect damage
to any data on the drive.
