Turning off Caps Lock

Is there a tweak that would enable Caps Lock to be turned off using
either the Caps Lock key or the Shift key?

Tips
Like Accessibility there is a trick here with general applicability. Normally Caps Lock is on or off and stays on or off untill the key is pressed again. This can be changed to act like a typewriter at Start - Control Panel - Regional And Language Options - Languages - Details - Key Settings and one can select whether another Caps Lock press will turn off Caps Lock or if pressing the Shift key will turn it off like on a typewriter.

Run Language Dialog then click Key Settings button.

I don't believe that's possible. You can certainly remap one key's
function to a different physical key, or have two physical keys with
the same function. But the Caps Lock key has the function of toggling
the Caps Lock state, not turning it off. Thus your only option would
be to turn the Shift key into a second Caps Lock key, which seems
pretty inconvenient.

My own approach has been to turn off the Caps Lock key by making it
into a second Shift key. I know that's not what you asked, but if you
decide it's better than nothing you can find instructions at

Normally *Caps Lock* is on or off and stays on or off untill the key is
pressed again. This can be changed to act like a typewriter at /Start -
Control Panel - Regional And Language Options - Languages - Details -
Key Settings/ and one can select whether another *Caps Lock* press will
turn off *Caps Lock* or if pressing the *Shift* key will turn it off
like on a typewriter.

Thanks. I knew that. It's also possible to make the change via the
registry. However what I want to do is to be able to turn off Caps Lock
either by pressing it again or by pressing the Shift key (like on my old
portable typewriter). The reason being that I learnt to type on a proper
typewriter and have never got used to the Caps Lock function. I'd like
either key to be able to turn off Caps Lock.

After reading David Candy's article I see I was wrong, for this
specific case anyway. I'm glad to know about that Regional setting.

Very nice -- but is there a way to get Caps Lock turned off by _both_ the Caps Lock and the Shift keys?
