Turn off Simple File Sharing

Guest

I am trying to set permissions for files on a pc running xp home addition
with sp2. I'm trying to follow the instructions to turn off "simple file
sharing", and cannot see the setting "use simple file sharing" check box, in
Folder Options. The closest thing to it is "Display simple folder view in
Explorer's Folders list".

Windows XP Home Edition uses Simple File Sharing by default. It
cannot be disabled. The instructions you're trying to follow
only apply to XP Professional.

In order to access the Security tab on your XP HE system you'll
have to boot into Safe Mode. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your
computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

I hope that the folders you're looking to restrict are ones you
created. If not, I'd suggest you leave them alone. Making
folders private is a far better approach than changing NTFS
permissions.

Good luck

Yes, they are folders I created, for the purpose of file sharing, but to set
up different user access depending on the User.

Then you should be fine. Just remember to boot into Safe Mode
whenever you want to make adjustments to the permissions.

One suggestion I'll pass along is to always leave the
Administrators group with Full Control. If you need to restrict
access by a user who is a member of this group then maybe they
shouldn't have an administrator account.

Good luck

Good advice. Even in XP Pro it amazes me that in certain folders don't
have Administrators granted full control. When you go messing with
permissions it's always a good idea to pay close attention and really
understand what you're doing.

You could simply use SafeXP. It gives you the ability to disable or
enable a large number of XP services by checking or unchecking check boxes.

Just out of curiosity, could you point out from this screenshot
how SafeXP will help the OP? Keep in mind that we're talking
NTFS permissions. He's trying to restrict local access. The
line in that program "No File Sharing" turns off access from
other computers on a network.

I'm also interested in knowing how. I just downloaded safe xp and don't see
any setting that will accomplish my task.

I rebooted in safe mode, but still could not see the "use simple file
sharing" check box, in Folder Options.

You have to log in to the Administrator account while in Safe Mode to see
that option.

That entry in Folder Options doesn't exist in Windows XP Home
Edition. As I pointed out in my earlier response, Simple File
Sharing cannot be disabled in XP Home Edition. The instructions
you're trying to follow don't apply to XP Home Edition.

What you're looking for is a way to access the Security tab on
the folders Properties sheet. Just boot into Safe Mode with an
account that is a Computer Administrator. Right click the
appropriate folder. The Security tab should now be available.
Make your changes and reboot. Check the folder to see if the
appropriate users have access.

Good luck
