I have a second HDD which I hardly ever use. Is there any "soft" way of
turning off the drive so that it stops spinning uselessly??? Any advise
would be appreciated.

I think that question was asked before. Only way is to remove power to drive.

You'll likely die before the damage is done to that drive from just
spinning. heh

However - none that I know of in the siutuation you describe. It has power
going to it - it spins up.. But it doesn't exactly do anything (the heads
don't move) unless it is accessed.

There is no way of "powering" down the hard drive built into Windows. Some
hard drive manuafacturers have utilities which would "spin-down" the hard
drive when not in use. These utilities need to work on all the drives, so
it may not be possible to use it if the drives are of different makes.

I know that people have converted internal drives to USB external drives.
This wat, you need only connect the drive when you need to.

I have also seen internal "hot-swap" drive "bays" but I have never used them
with Windows.
