What would cause the Display Properties > Screen Saver > Power > "Turn off
monitor after X minutes" feature to stop working?
I have a user whose monitor turns off after 20 minutes of inactivity; their
screen saver kicks in after 10 minutes of inactivity. After running certain
programs, however, the monitor no longer turns off. Their screen saver still
kicks in, but the monitor doesn't turn off. The only recourse is to log off
and log back on; then the monitor turns off properly. Note that rebooting is
not required; simply logging off seems to "reset" things. What could be
causing this? Is there anyway around it? This user stays logged in almost
all of the time with certain business programs remaining running, so logging
off and back on all of the time isn't practical.
FWIW, I've seen cases where an application somehow prevents the *screen
saver* from engaging--even though it's still set in Display Properties >
Screen Saver. However, once that application is closed, the screen saver
engages normally.
