Turn off date field updates

Is there a way to stop the date field from updating to the
current date whenever I open an old word file? The date
needs to be preserved in the document.

Right click>toggle field codes and change { DATE } to { CREATEDATE }

if you are inserting the date in new documents using Insert>Date then
uncheck Update automatically in the insert date dialog box.

Right-click the date and select Toggle Field Codes. You'll see the
field code within braces, and the first word will be either DATE or
TIME. Change that word to CREATEDATE, leaving the rest of the code
unchanged. Right-click again and select Update Field.
