Turn Off All Reading Panes in Outlook 2003

For every new folder that I go to I have to turn it off individually. Is
there a global switch that can disable the reading pane?

Turn it off in the default Messages view template;
View-> Arrange By-> Current View...-> Define Views...

Just curious; why do you want it off by default?

Thanks! Mostly a personal preference--I usually use laptops and prefer to
have the screen space devoted to other stuff. I also subscribe to the idea
that there is some greater virus risk by using the pane to automatically
view messages.

the preview pane is actually slightly safer than open mail because it
doesn't run active content.
