Howto set reading pane off for new folders

Hello,
I'd like to have the reading pane OFF for all folders by default
(OL2003).
I manually switched the reading pane off for each folder.
But whenever I create a new folder, the reading pane of the new folder
is on. While the position ("right" vs. "bottom") of the reading pane in
the new folder reflects the last used setting, it does not remember the
setting "off".
Q: How can I achieve that the reading pane is off for any newly created
folder?

Don't change it for each and every folder but simply edit the default
Messages view template.
View-> Arrange By-> Current View-> Define Views

I found that template and was anstonished to see that the reading pane
was already switched off in that view.
Now when I create a new folder it has the reading pane off by default.
I'm still wondering how the default view got changed before I knew about
it.
