Turn of System Tray, don't want it running in background

I only use POP3 email with Outlook 2003. It seems to always have the Outlook
running in the background (as shown in my system tray). Is there a way to
stop it fron running in the background? It seems to look for new email, etc
even when I don't have Outlook open? Why would you need this if using POP3
Mail only and I never use Messanger either.

Usually, if you close, as opposed to minimize, Outlook it won't run in the
tray at all. Sometimes it's nice to have it running so you can check for
mail on a schedule.
