Hi,

Can anyone help? I am running a HPzd8000 laptop and suddenly it no longer
reads Audio CDs or CD roms. The Drive is the tsst corp CD/DVDW TS-L532M and
I have seen some forums that suggest that my only solution is to replace
this. Is this definitely the case? And if so, what should I replace it with?

DVD drives tend to have two different lasers, one to access DVDs and
the second for CDs. If your drive can not read one CDs, then the
laser to read has failed. Because the DVD / CD drives are extremely
complex / compact, it is easier to replace the drive that it is to
physically get it repaired.

The CD laser has failed.

HP should be able to provide a replacement drive (though it won't be the
original type). HP is not a particularly cheap source of drives and the
fact that it is a laptop drive doesn't help. An alternative drive may be
able to be fitted but it does depend on whether you can fit the bezel from
the old drive and also any interface adaptor from the back of the old drive.
Note also that not all the useable drives support Litescribe which your
original drive does.

I have been looking for an answer to this for a while and when smlunatick mentioned that there are two different lasers for CD and DVD, I opened the drive and blasted it with compressed air. Works like new!
